In dance, flex and point refer to specific positions or actions of the feet and are fundamental in many styles, particularly ballet, contemporary, and jazz. Here's what each term means:
Flex: This means the toes are pulled back toward the shin, creating a 90-degree angle at the ankle. The foot is not extended; instead, it appears "flat" or "flexed." Flexed feet are often used in contemporary dance to create more grounded or unconventional movements. It can also highlight a different aesthetic compared to the pointed foot.
Point: This refers to the foot being fully extended, with the toes stretched away from the body and the arch of the foot elongated. In ballet and other technical dance forms, pointing the feet is crucial to creating long, elegant lines. A pointed foot gives the impression of extension and grace.
Flex and point are often taught early in dance training because they impact both the aesthetic and technical quality of movements. Dancers learn to control these foot positions to express different styles and energies in their performances.
